Fragility of Light

“Life and Light" is a very simple yet richly symbolic painting exploring Life and Light in relationship with each other. For those who like to look beyond superficial meaning like yourself, my dear collector, I invite you to analyze this one with me:

First off, lets take into account the only element in the painting which is in this case: a lit matchstick.

In art, a matchstick can symbolize a variety of concepts depending on the context and the artist's intention. It often represents illumination, enlightenment, or the spark of creativity.

In this painting I wanted to represent time; the fragility of life juxtaposed against the transient, yet potent, flame of a matchstick creates a melancholic tension, highlighting the fleeting nature of existence and the delicate balance between illumination and darkness.

Furthermore, the image of a woman holding a matchstick may also represent nurturing and protection, as she holds the flame with care and intention, guiding its potential while safeguarding against its possibility to cause harm.

And lastly, the stress that she might also burn herself if she lets it burn for too long, as to address passion, desires, the intensity of emotions. We are taught to always be careful when we play with fire and I find myself thinking: isn't life itself playing with fire? Whatever the intense emotion might be, if we burn ourselves or not, the flame will fade away along with life.

I gave myself the liberty to "treat" the wood panel, to let it soak and blister in the bottom and help it heal afterwards following with painting on top of it. In the painting you can see subtle textures which were created in addition to the meaningfulness in relationship with the artwork as a whole. Varnished and painted with the highest quality materials, this artwork is one for the ages.

Overall, this painting depicts the passage of time, enlightenment, the delicate balance between illumination and darkness and the stress of intense emotions.
